About Wing Chun Kung Fu
Wing Chun’s history and techniques have historically been passed down from teacher to student verbally making it difficult to learn and track it’s actual history, however, the information here is widely accepted as the origin of the Yip Man branch of Wing Chun of which we belong.

Wing Chun’s history originates around 400 years ago to an attack on the Fujian Shaolin Monastery by Qing forces. At the monastery, Monks trained Kung Fu, excercising their bodies and minds, using martial arts to develop their spiritual training.

The Government at that time believed that these Monks were training a secret army, and in their fear attacked the monastery and burned it to the ground.

Ng Muiwas a nun rumoured to be one of 5 Kung Fu Grand Masters who escaped the attack. The 5 Grand Masters created a fighting style that would dominate all other martial arts to use to defend themselves against military, and assassins.

Ng Mui taught this new style to Yim Wing Chun, the daughter of Yim Yee. Yim Wing Chun later used this new style to fend off advances, and attacks from a warlord. Wing Chun later married teaching this new fighting style to her husband. Yim Wing Chun and her husband taught this style to a small number of students

Yip Man, born in 1898, started learning Wing Chun at 9 years old, offering his life’ssavings to be accepted as one of the 16 deciples of Chan Wah Shun. He became an extremely talented Wing Chun practioner, and widely accepted as one of the most famous patriarch’s and Grand Masters of the Wing Chun Kung Fu system.

Yip Man was the first to teach Wing Chun openly to students whilst in Hong Kong, although there is much secrecy and confusion around what he taught to whom. The recent Ip Man films show some of Yip Man’s story.

Bruce Lee was a naturally talented street fighter, but after losing a fight with rival gang members, he approached Yip Man asking him to take him on as a student. Bruce Lee was 13 years old at the time.

Wing Chun is a very direct, close range fighting style. It utilises a relaxed state to maximise it’s efficiency and effectiveness through generating devastating short range power. Wing Chun’s simultaneous attack, trapping, and counter attacking techniques, once trained and mastered, make it one of the most effective fighting styles on the planet. Because of this, Wing Chun is used by a number of military, and special forces units around the world.

Taking advantage of Wing Chun’s close range fighting style, Hong Kong Airlines recently announced that cabin crew are being trained in Wing Chun to deal with drunken and unruly passengers whilst aircraft are in the air.
